Welcome to the Caroline Lavelle Questions and Answers page of
this site! If you want to ask Caroline a question, then
please click here.
As soon as she has some answers ready we'll post them
here. Check back regularly!
Caroline took some time to answer your questions, so here
are both answers and questions! Thanks to everybody sending
in a question, and keep them coming!
Q: I heard Caroline's mother is Irishwoman, so I'd like to ask that she will sing in Irish language on the new album?
A: I do sing a song in Irish but I'm not sure if it will be on the new album. Mum
was brought up near Bantry Bay in a place called Ballylickey. She doesn't speak
Irish though! I sometimes sing the irish song when I'm out at a pub session for
fun.
Q: How do you start out on a new recording, and how much can your original concept change during that
process?
A:I usually start with several false starts! The original concept so far has
remained each time what I envisaged really... It's a sort of flavour that runs
through the album that I feel before I start that's what I want to achieve.
I've started the new record and I'm quite excited about it. The writing is the
best bit for me.
Q: Hi, My name is Vitor. I m from Brazil, and I have to say that I simply love Caroline Lavelle's music...
She's one of the best singers and songwritters that I've ever known
She have an incredible sensibilty and tallent to make music...
She's just amazing!!!!
A: Thank you very much.
Q: Well, the purpose of this e-mail, is the question:
HOW OLD ARE CAROLINE LAVELLE?
It's impossible to me find the answer of this question (I search it a lot...)
It seems that Caroline, can't reveal your age!
If she doesn't have some problem to reveal it, I'd really really like to know her age
'Cause I'm a biggest fan, and all biggest fan want to know about your idol, and the age of an idol it's an essencial
topic to a fan! - Victor H.
A: I almost never lie - the only time I lie is about my age and I lie about it in
different ways all the time so no-one will know the truth! However, seriously,
I do have a problem with the way that women are portrayed as their age being so
important, whereas we all know that one person who is say, 35, is a completely
different age in their soul to another of the same physical age.
Q: Your music is great, and your albums keep getting better and better.
2 questions....
-If you could do any other type of fine art, be it painting, drawing, acting, or even taking up another
instrument, what would you choose?
-do you plan on any other collaboration projects in the near future, such as
working on Loreena McKennitt's new album? - Angie
A:There are many things I would like to do well. I would love to play the guitar
really well or even at all really... the oboe, the piano, the violin... I used
to play the double bass and enjoyed that but at college for some reason they
made me stop - they seemed to think that I wouldn't be able to tell the
difference between cello and double-bass technique... rather unenlightened I
think. I do paint - huge murals which are rip-offs of Matisse. My last house in
Sussex had some about 3 metres high and the new owners have endeared themselves
to me by keeping them. Acting would be great - the few videos I've made were
such great fun that I'd love to do some acting - I used to have lessons some
time ago and enjoyed it very much.
As far as collaborations go, there is always one on the cards with Hector Zazou
- it changes shape but is always threatening to come about! I am planning a
remix EP of A Distant Bell with remixers who were the winners of a competition
to remix Banks of the Nile. I was so impressed that I thought a remix album
would let them all show off what they can do. It will be interesting I think. I
don't know about Loreena's album; I hope to be involved as I love working with
her - she is an inspiring woman.
Q: G'day Caroline,
Burbank, CA here-WILL YOU BE TOURING your new cd in the US at all? HUGE fan of yours!!! I wrote you right before Brilliant Midnite came out a few years ago and you emailed back (I was enquiring at the time on when you would update your site). Thank you for writing back! CANNOT wait to hear your new cd!!! Come to LA, let's have tea!!!
Also just wanted to know if you will be working on the next Loreena Mckennit cd. I got the chance to see you with Loreena at the Universal Ampitheatre and you both were brilliant when you sang together!!!
HAVE a great time in Italy, I'll be in Florence & Venice in mid November...any chance of you being there?
- Samuel
A: I hope you had a great time in Italy - I love it there. I am hoping to come to
the US to tour before too long but don't have any concrete plans at the moment.
I'm always in the market for tea though - although I am a bit weird and have
soya milk in it... I remember the gig at the Universal Amphitheatre - it was
brilliant fun. Roll on the next one!
Q: Did you originally discover "Gentle Johnny" through its inclusion in the film "The Wicker Man" ?
- RobB
A: Yes, it was actually my manager Ian Blackaby who drew it to my attention - he
has the collector's version of the DVD - mmm... should questions be asked?!
Q: I have been a big fan of yours since the release of Spirit back in '95, and I have really enjoyed all your music. I didn't think you could top Spirit, but I love Brilliant Midnight even more, and I just ordered A Distant Bell, and I am in eager anticipation for it. I definitely regard you as one of the world's most talented and creative musicians/artists and I'm always in awe of the music you write and how you put it all together.
Back in '95 I saw you performing on TV here in the US (that was actually how I first came across your music). I still have and VCR tape of that show, but I really want to see one of your live performances. So I was just wondering if you have any plans for coming here to the States for some concerts?
- Mike from Chicago
A: I'd love to see that VCR! I remember doing the show - was it in Portland, OR?
The guy who presented it became a friend of mine; bizarrely, he later taught me
and some of the other girls in the band Argentinian Tango in the dressing room
backstage at an Indigo Girls gig.
Q: According Factory's "Palatine" boxset and other discography resources, a
Caroline Lavelle 12" release was planned on Factory with the FAC 109
catalogue number. This release was, however, abandoned.
Why was this never released on Factory and have these recordings seen the
light of day on any subsequent releases? - Mike
A: It never really came to fruition.
Q: How's the tennis going? I am waiting for a local coach to get back to me before I start playing
Brig tells me you ran 2.5 miles without stopping. CONGRATULATIONS! Keep
it up - Mary (Down Under)
A: I'm still running - although not far and I am looking forward to the weather
being a little kinder so we can all play tennis again. Although I'm very bad at
it still...
Q: Did Caroline Lavelle ever work for Mapping and Webb in Regent Street before she was famous?
- Peter
A: Yes I did. I had no work and I needed a job so I walked up and down Regent
Street going into every shop asking if they had any work available. It was very
interesting although I always felt rather out of place because I'm a bit
scruffy...
